Slideshow: CEWE Photo Award 2023 winners highlight how “our world is beautiful”

CEWE Photo Award 2023

CEWE, one of Europe’s leading photo printing and finishing suppliers, recently announced the winners of its annual photo contest, the CEWE Photo Award 2023, at the PHOTOPIA Imaging festival in Hamburg, Germany, last month. This year’s theme of the photo contest was ‘Our world is beautiful,’ and Indonesian photographer Dikye Ariani, took home the overall grand prize for a candid photo of people playing a card game inside a traditional Indonesian cafe.

With over 500,000 entries from 147 countries, the CEWE Photo Award 2023 is the world’s largest photo contest in terms of submissions. Although the contest is free to enter, CEWE donates ten cents per photo entry to SOS Children’s Villages, an international children’s aid organization. From this year’s contest, CEWE donated over 50,000 euros to SOS Children’s Villages for an educational program in Somalia.

DPReview has compiled the winning photographs from each of the competition’s ten categories, but we encourage you to check out the full winner’s gallery with all of the top selected photographs.

Overall Winner (and People category winner)

Title: ‘Warung kopi’ by Dikye Ariani, Indonesia

CEWE / Jury comments: Right from the heart of life: Photographer Dikye Ariani, who comes from Indonesia, impressively shows how the atmosphere of a special moment can be captured – and for this she is not only honored by the jury as the ‘People’ category winner, but also as the overall winner of the CEWE Photo Award 2023: ‘A powerful picture with a very good composition of a connected community – right from the heart of Indonesian life,’ says jury president Michel Comte.

Sports category winner

Title: ‘Triathlon’ by Rainer Köfferlein, Germany

CEWE / Jury comments: A tribute to all runners: Munich amateur photographer Rainer Köfferlein has succeeded in developing an impressive, strong visual language using objects and shadows. According to the jury, the winning photo in the ‘Sport’ category immortalizes ‘everything that makes up sport: the beauty of movement, the competitive element and the enthusiasm of the spectators.’

Cooking & Food category winner

Title: ‘Night workers’ by Clerio Back, Brazil

CEWE / Jury comments: A brief moment, a great photo: after a long day at work, the chefs at a wedding party in Brazil take a break. Clério Black captures this fleeting moment in the winning photo of the ‘Cooking & Food’ category. The jury: ‘The smartphone camera captures this scene compositionally and technically at the highest level – a small moment that has become a great photo thanks to the photographer’s skill and visual language.’

Architecture & Technology category winner

Title: ‘Gewimmel’ by Michael Kemter, Austria

CEWE / Jury comments: Order in chaos: The winning image in the category ‘Architecture & Technology’ was taken by professional photographer Michael Kemter on the busy observation deck ‘The Summit’ in New York City. The jury was impressed: ‘This photograph gives us a front-row seat, like in a theatre, like at a performance. It elevates the mundane to a world of experience that the eye can hardly get enough of.’

Hobby & Leisure category winner

Title: ‘Le plongeon’ by Karl Bordron, France

CEWE / Jury comments: The moment afterwards: The winning picture in the category ‘Hobby & Leisure’ was taken during a family holiday in the South of France and captures the seconds just before submersion. With this, amateur photographer Karl Bordron convinced the jury: ‘What is so special about this picture is that you can feel the complete silence of the anonymous person under water, after their submersion after the jump. Is it possible to leave reality through a single jump? Yes, in this tiny little moment.’

Nature category winner

Title: ‘collapsing glacier’ by Christian Bovians, Germany

CEWE / Jury comments: Thundering vulnerability and treacherous calm: huge masses of ice plunge into the water, not far away seals lie calmly and visibly unimpressed on floating ice floes. The motif by amateur photographer Christian Bovians impressively depicts this dichotomy, and for this the jury chose it as the winning photo in the ‘Nature’ category: ‘This is such a visually beautiful picture with a vivid depiction of the frightening consequences of global warming.’

Landscapes category winner

Title: ‘Doom’ by Marián Kuric, Slovakia

CEWE / Jury comments: The glowing power of the earth: The winning image in the ‘Landscapes’ category by professional photographer Marián Kuric impressively shows how a volcano in Iceland comes to life. ‘This is a great photo with a dramatic and mystical expression, as if it had been taken in the middle of the Earth’s evolutionary history,’ said the jury.

Animals category winner

Title: ‘Hände’ by Claudia Räss, Switzerland

CEWE / Jury comments: Come, give me your hand: the chimpanzees in Kibale National Park delicately and elegantly groom their fur. Amateur photographer Claudia Räss captured this scene photographically and was awarded the prize in the category ‘Animals.’ The jury: ‘The photo shows a strongly focused section of a much larger scene, but it is precisely the concentration on the monkeys’ hands that shows the emotionality of the animals.’

Aerial Photos category winner

Title: ‘Y Crossing 4’ by Chin Leong Teo, Singapore

CEWE / Jury comments: Symphony of symmetry: The winning image in the ‘Aerial Photography’ category was taken by professional photographer Chin Leong Teo in Tokyo and captivates the viewer’s eye in a very special way. The jury agrees: ‘What strong lines in this picture! The symmetry embodies the essence of balance and order, a testament to the photographer’s keen eye and deep appreciation for the appeal of lines and structures.’

Travel & Culture category winner

Title: ‘Palmenhain’ by Hans Wichmann, Germany

CEWE / Jury comments: Like a moment from a bygone era: The winning picture in the category ‘Travel & Culture,’ taken by professional photographer Hans Wichmann on the Nile in Egypt, inspired the jury: ‘The picture shows a magical moment, as if time had stood still. The technical brilliance and sensitive design with the courage to use dark image areas develop a visual density that convinced us.’
