Hands on with the retro-inspired Fujifilm Instax SQ40

Introducing the Fujfilm Instax SQ40

We recently got our hands on Fujifilm’s newest square format instant film camera: the Instax SQ40. The SQ40 has a similar retro-inspired aesthetic as the Instax Mini 40, but shoots the larger format square film.

From a specs perspective the SQ40 is similar to the Instax SQ1 that launched in 2020, but the black and silver SQ40 has an undeniable cool factor when compared to the candy-colored SQ1.

Design and handling

The SQ40 is reminiscent of the Instax Mini 40, but it feels a bit nicer to the touch. The textured leatherette on the SQ40 offers a less plasticky gripping surface than the finish on the Mini 40.

The shutter button is located on a slight protrusion next to the camera’s lens. This subtle change is unique to the SQ40, and a welcome ergonomic upgrade. The SQ1’s shutter button was flush against the body, making it easy to bump it and accidentally take a photo. With this change, it’s way less likely that shutter mishaps will happen.

Design and handling (continued)

From a size and weight perspective the SQ40 is similar to the SQ1. It’s chunkier than the models that shoot Instax mini film, but still comfortably lightweight. The SQ40 features a longer strap, which makes it easier to travel with as you can throw it over your shoulder or around your neck.

There is a comfortable thumb rest on the back of the camera next to the film door and the frame counter. The viewfinder is placed above that thumb rest and is clear, bright and doesn’t feel too small when composing shots.

Lens and exposure capabilities

The SQ40 has the same retractable 65.75mm (around 32.4mm equiv) F12.6 lens as the SQ1. Twist the lens to the left to turn it to the on position. Twist the camera lens all the way back, or to the right, to turn it off.

This camera has a fully automatic flash that always fires and exposure control that adjusts the shutter speed (1/2 sec – 1/400 sec). It has a recycle time of 7.5 secs and a max flash range of 2.2m (7.2 ft). In regular mode the SQ40 has a fixed focus range of 0.5m (1.6 ft) to infinity.

Selfie mode and mirror

You can activate selfie mode by twisting the lens all the way to the left. In this mode the fixed focus range is 0.3 – 0.5m (1.0 – 1.6ft), increasing the sharpness of images shot at close range.

A small mirror on the front of the lens assists in framing those selfies.

Film and battery life

The Instax SQ40 runs on two CR2 lithium batteries, which should provide enough power for approximately 300 shots of Instax Square film. As battery power depletes it will take longer for the flash to recycle between shots.

Instax Square film is sold in single packs of 10, double packs of 10 and larger bulk packs. Film packs range in price from approximately $12.99 to $99.99 in the USA; to get the most bang for your buck we recommend splurging on a bulk pack, which brings the cost per shot to about $0.50 per photo.

Final thoughts

Ultimately the Instax SQ40 is an easy-to-use instant camera with a cool design and smart ergonomic changes. We think it will appeal to folks who enjoy the instant film experience and favor square film.

Specs-wise it’s very similar to the SQ1, but the black and silver colors do give it a more professional look. The redesign of the shutter button placement and the long strap are also improvements that make it easier to use. Although it’s slightly more expensive than the candy-colored SQ1, we think these small design changes make it worth the price.

The SQ40 will be available at the end of June 2023 for $149.95.
