Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek has unveiled its latest mid-tier chipset, the Dimensity 1080. The chip is the successor to 2021’s Dimensity 920 and is built on TSMC’s N6 6nm manufacturing node.
The Dimensity 1080 features numerous improvements over the Dimensity 920, including the chip’s image processing capabilities. The 1080 can handle data from image sensors up to 200MP, whereas the Dimensity 920’s sensor support peaked at 108MP. Given that we’re seeing more smartphones with Samsung’s ISOCELL 200MP image sensors, like the recently announced Xiaomi 12T Pro, MediaTek’s latest chip comes at an opportune time. The chip’s Imagiq image signal processing system can also perform hardware-accelerated HDR video, although this isn’t unique to the 1080.
The chip includes a pair of Cortex-A78 performance cores clocked at 2.6GHz, an improvement from the 920’s 2.5GHz clock speed. The GPU is the same – a Mali-G68. MediaTek didn’t outline any new gaming-specific features, and the chip still supports sub-6GHz 5G networks and Wi-Fi 6. Further, like the Dimensity 920, the new Dimensity 1080 has the same AI Processing Unit (APU). The new chip includes the same LPDDR5 memory support and UFS 3.1 storage modules.

In terms of pure power, the new chip seems like an incremental upgrade, as the previous Dimensity 920 was over its predecessor, the Dimensity 900. However, despite modest gains, the ability to support 200MP image capture without shutter lag is significant and will greatly impact the mid-range smartphone market.
‘Continuing MediaTek’s legacy of optimizing power and performance, the Dimensity 1080 offers a full suite of advanced features that challenge expectations about what a 5G smartphone can do,’ said CH Chen, Deputy General Manager of Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek. ‘This new chipset is designed to further enhance many of the functions that made its predecessor great, including processing power, camera and video quality, and time to market for manufacturers.’
The Dimensity 1080 will be available later this year. Given that the chip shares some hardware and software with the Dimensity 920, MediaTek believes that smartphone manufacturers will be able to bring new phones with the 1080 to market quickly.
