Omnivision’s new 200MP mobile sensor with 0.56μm pixels is nearly identical to Samsung’s HP3 sensor

Sensor manufacturer Omnivision has announced the release of the OVB0A, a 200MP mobile imaging sensor destined for flagship mobile devices.

The Type 1/1.4 (9.1 x 6.9mm) sensor offers 200MP of resolution with 0.56-micrometer (μm) pixels. It features 16-cell binning for use in low-light environments (resulting in a 12.5MP image) and has 100% quad phase detection (QPD) autofocus for quick and accurate AF capabilities. In terms of image and video quality, the OVB0A can capture 4K video at up 120 frames per second (fps), HDR 4K video at 60fps and even 8K video using an on-chip remosiac function.

Interestingly, these key specifications match up identically to the HP3 sensor Samsung revealed back in June. Like the OVB0A, the HP3 is a Type 1/1.4 (9.1 x 6.9mm) sensor with 200MP resolution, 0.56μm pixels, ‘Super Quad Phase Detection’ technology and even 16-cell pixel binning for low-light scenes.

One area where the sensors appear to differ is in their respective high dynamic range capture technologies. While Samsung is using its new Smart-ISO Pro feature, which Samsung says combines a low ISO mode with either a mid or high ISO mode to capture more dynamic range, Omnivision says its OVB0A uses ‘selective conversion gain’ (SCG) technology, which is appears to be a bit more primitive. Whereas Samsung’s technology adjusts the gain level on a pixel level with in-pixel readout modes to get more dynamic range, Omnivision’s technology selects one readout for the entire pixel array and uses that depending on whether the scene is bright or dark.

Omnivision says the OVB0A will be available to device manufacturers in Q4 2022. The company specifically says the sensor is designed for use in main wide-angle camera modules on the rear of flagship smartphones.

The OVB0A is designed for rear-facing (wide-angle) main cameras in high-end smartphones. With its unique 16-cell binning capability, the OVB0A image sensor delivers the best low-light performance in its class. It also features 100% quad phase detection (QPD) for superior autofocus.

In fact, OVB0A’s 0.56µm pixel is not only the first in the world smaller than the wavelength of red light, but its QPD and quantum efficiency (QE) performances also mirror those of our 0.61µm pixel-based OVB0B image sensor in the visible light range,” states Arun Jayaseelan, senior product marketing manager, OMNIVISION. “Leveraging our PureCel®Plus-S stacked-die technology, we can maintain extremely high resolution in the smaller 0.56µm pixel size, packing 200M pixels into a 1/1.4-inch optical form factor.”

The OVB0A sensor’s selective conversion gain attains the optimum balance between low-light image quality and high dynamic range (HDR). This allows smartphone OEMs to optimize HDR performance for contrasting light and dark areas in any scene. The image sensor also utilizes 16-cell binning to achieve premium video capture of 12.5MP/4K at 120 frames per second (fps). It achieves 12.5MP/4K at 60fps with 2-exposure staggered HDR timing; an on-chip remosaic function enables 8K video and 2X crop zoom (with HDR) at 12.5MP.
